Yukon Gold Rocker Pg. 2

When the gold rocker is not in use, keep it covered or out of the sun. If not kept moist, the rocker will dry out and crack considerably in many places from the constant drying and wetting effect. Gold has an uncanny ability to discover all those cracks and lodge there out of sight.

Use an indoor/outdoor carpeting without the rubber backing. Water has a tendency to do many unfavorable things to the rubber backing. Use quality materials in the lumber and hardware, so that the unit will serve the operator well.

Making the unit light is essential for getting around the trails and in the bush areas. I used 3/4" plywood because it will be subject to the aggregate.

If the builder requires a shorter, lighter unit, then use the 1/4" plywood for making it. This will take special handling and a watchful eye on the dimensions. Here is one idea that you can use or expand upon: Place 1" x 1" pine wood strips into each corner of the rocker box where the 1/4" plywood joins together and fasten these with wood glue and wood screws. Refer to step 1.

Step 3

The material and dimensions for all the parts of the Yukon gold rocker are listed below:

Rocker box:

  • 2 pieces of 8" x 5" x 3/4" plywood.
  • 1 piece of 8" x 18" x 3/4" ply-wood.
  • 1 piece of 18" x 5" x 3/4" ply-wood.
  • 1 piece of 1" x 3 1/2" x 16 5/8" pine.

Sifter header box screen:

  • 2 pieces of 1" x 3 112" x 20" pine.
  • 4 pieces of 1" x 3 1/2"x 16 1/4".
  • 2 pieces of 1" x 3 112" x 16 7/8".

Riffle seater:

Note: If the builder cannot obtain exactly 1" x 1" wood for the riffles, go to a nursery supply store and purchase plant staking sticks (1" x 1" stakes).

  • 2 pieces 1" x 2" x 44" pine.
  • 13 pieces of F" x 1" x 16 1/4" pine.
  • Rocker base: (made from redwood 2 x 4s).
  • 2 pieces of 2" x 4" x 12" (bolt holder; rocker mate).
  • 2 pieces of 2" x 4" x 18" (rockers; bolt holder mate).
  • 2 pieces 2" x 4" x 48".

Step 1. Attach the 1/4" plywood sides to the 1/4" plywood flooring to make the unit lighter.

Step 2. Saw from the plywood 2 pieces 8" x 59 1/4" then cut the dimensions.

Step 3. Assemble the rocker box flooring to the box sides and to the box end. Attach the pine brace 1" x 3 1/2" x 16" inside to the sides of the rocker box.
